How to Split a PDF File Online

Splitting a PDF is useful in dozens of everyday situations. A 50-page report where you only need pages 12 through 18. A scanned booklet where you need the first half for one recipient and the second half for another. Our free PDF splitter handles all these scenarios and more.

Three Ways to Split Your PDF

  • Extract all pages separately — perfect for converting a multi-page PDF into individual single-page files, useful for presentations or image-based workflows.
  • Custom page ranges — enter ranges like "1-5, 8, 12-15" to extract exactly the pages you need as separate PDF files.
  • Split every N pages — divide a large document into chunks of equal size, ideal for splitting a 100-page document into 10-page booklets.

Why Split a PDF?

There are many practical reasons to split a PDF. Email providers and web portals often have file size or attachment limits. Splitting a large PDF into smaller parts makes it easy to share via email without hitting those limits. Teachers and educators use PDF splitting to distribute only the relevant sections of a textbook to students. Legal professionals split contracts to share only the relevant clauses with specific parties.

What Format Do I Get?

When you split a PDF into multiple files, the tool creates a ZIP archive containing all the resulting PDFs. Simply download the ZIP file and extract it on your computer to get all the individual PDF pages or sections. If you only split into one range, a single PDF is provided directly.

FAQs — Split PDF

How do I extract just one page from a PDF?
Choose "Custom page ranges" and enter a single page number (e.g. "5") to extract just that one page as a standalone PDF.
Can I split a PDF into equal-sized chunks?
Yes. Use the "Split every N pages" option and set N to your desired chunk size. For example, setting N to 10 will split a 50-page PDF into five 10-page PDFs.
Does splitting reduce image or text quality?
No. Splitting only reorganises which pages go into which file. All content remains exactly as in the original. There is no re-encoding or quality loss.
Can I reorder pages while splitting?
For reordering pages within a single document, use our Organize PDF tool instead, which lets you drag and drop pages into any sequence before saving.
